The Wisconsin Uprising: Five years later

Five years ago this past week the Wisconsin Uprising began. It changed the direction of many lives, and impacted Wisconsinites in ways that we still do not fully comprehend. Many of us have seen our wages go down, and the Wisconsin economy has never fully recovered from the great recession.

There was some hesitation to write this diary. It will surely attract some very ugly comments, as does every post about Wisconsin: “You deserve it,” and “You elected him three times” are just some what of what will be said. All of the insults are just about memorized at this point. At one time the liberals and progressives of Wisconsin were the heroes of the left. However, with a gerrymandered legislature, getting outspent by Walker’s unlimited war chest, and a Supreme Court that was sold to the highest bidder, we never had a chance to take our state back. We were just too naive to see it at the time. We thought our numbers and our opinions mattered. Sadly, a complicit statewide media that was overly kind to Walker—and unfettered campaign cash—won the day. And we lost.

Since then, Walker found he couldn’t stand the spotlight of the national media when he attempted to run for president. He ended up running back to Wisconsin with his tail between his legs. We still have a gerrymandered legislature, and are unable to stop any of the truly horrible bills being shoved through the Assembly and Senate. It has gotten to the point that nothing the Wisconsin GOP shoves through surprises me anymore. Much of Robert M. LaFollette’s progressive legacy has been overturned. Wisconsin is now a wholly owned subsidiary of Koch Industries.

This is no longer the Wisconsin I grew up in. But when I do look back to five years ago, I am reminded of the promise we had—what we thought we could do, and the energy we carried. That energy, that promise is what keeps me going. The Republican overreach will come back to haunt them—and the Democrats will at some point have to repair the damage that Walker and his cabal have done to this state.

If you came to this diary to make derogatory comments about Wisconsin: Don’t. The only thing it will do is show you are kind of an asshole. So don’t be an asshole.

Now, to share some photos of the Wisconsin Uprising, photos that I took five years ago, photos that changed my life for the better, informed many of you of what was really happening in Wisconsin—and showed me what democracy should look like.
